It is a post–World War II art movement in American painting that came into existence in1940. Alfred Barr was the first American art historian who had used this term in 1929.

According to the history of Abstract expressionism, It was first applied by American artists (Robert Coates). Indeed, America is the origin of this art style, but in 1919, a magazine Der Sturm (German art and literary magazine) had coined this phrase.

The name of this art movement has been derived from the combination of (self-denial + emotional intensity). If you compare this art style with Russian painting, you will get- Abstract expressionism has many similarities.
